Itinerary:

Please join me for an awesome weekend of hiking in the beautiful David Thompson Country around Nordegg. We will start with 2 easier hikes on Saturday but will be challenged to summit Coliseum Mountain on Sunday.

We will be spending 2 days and 2 nights at the HI- Shunda Creek Hostel in Nordegg. This will be our base for the weekend. We will leave together from the carpool at 5:00 PM on Friday evening September 7, and head to Nordegg, arriving at the HI Shunda Hostel around 8:30 PM. Please ensure to eat prior to the drive or bring food with you for dinner as the local Nordegg restaurant closes at 7:45 PM.

I would like to be on the road by 9:00 AM on Saturday for a brief 45 minute drive to the Siffleur Falls trailhead. Starting at 10:00 AM we will begin the 9.7 kilometer out and back trail which should take us 2-3 hours. With only a 208 m elevation gain, we should have plenty of energy left to stop at Crescent Falls on the way back to the Hostel. We should arrive at Crescent Falls sometime between 2:00 - 3:00 PM. As Crescent Falls is only 5.6 KM with 144 m of elevation gain we should be back at the hostel around 6:00 PM.

Dinner will be pot luck style at the hostel. While moderate consumption of alcohol is permitted at the hostel, NO HARD LIQUOR is permitted and quiet time begins at 11:00 PM.

Sunday, COLISEUM MOUNTAIN...The Main Event. I have unfinished business with this 13 kilometer out and back mountain after only making it to the tree line with snowshoes. Don't drink too much on Saturday, this 808 m elevation gain will require some energy. I would like to start by 8:00 am so we can be finished around 2:00 PM. Please ensure to pack a snack which we can enjoy at the summit. After the hike we can have a late lunch at the Nordegg Lodge before driving back to Edmonton.

Plan for all types of weather; hopefully it will be sunny, but we could have rain conditions, and/or windy conditions.

We will be staying in a co-ed dorm cabin. Bedding will be provided and sleeping bags are NOT permitted. There is a well equipped kitchen with appliances, pots and pans, dishes to cook your own food for the weekend. There is running water, hot showers and electricity in this hostel.

For those who are unfamiliar with the area, here are a few more notes about Nordegg and the Bighorn Backcountry Region:

The David Thompson Corridor/Bighorn Backcountry Region stretches along an 83 km section of Hwy 11 in west-central Alberta, from Nordegg west to the Banff National Park boundary (where Hwy 11 intersects with Hwy 93 at Saskatchewan Crossing). The hamlet of Nordegg (pop. ~200), located approximately 200 km west of Red Deer, is a former coal-mining town that once had a peak population of ~2500 people. Coal mining activities shut down in Nordegg in the mid 1950s and the remnants of the former Brazeau Collieries mine site are now a National Historic Site of Canada. The Shunda Creek Hostel, where we will be staying, is located to the north of the townsite.
