Itinerary: | |||||||
This amazing, world renowned trail takes hikers to some of the best scenery in the province. Beyond Kinney Lake, the trail enters the valley of a thousand falls. Fed by Mist, Berg, and Robson glaciers, visitors often see and hear huge chunks of glacier ice break off into the blue green lake. The hike to Berg Lake camp is a strenuous 21 km and 800 m net gain from the trailhead parking lot. We will camp at Kinney lake for one night, and Berg Lake for 2 nights.
There will be a pretrip meeting, date and time to be emailed to participants. The plan is to meet at a location on the south side of Edmonton, and carpool to Mt Robson, leaving early Thursday morning. We can stop in Jasper for any last minute supplies, maybe an ice cream and head to Mt Robson. After we reach Mt Robson, we will pick up our back country/tent passes at the info center, park at the trail head and hike in to Kinney lake (7 km). We will set up camp at Kinney Lake and have dinner. This part of the hike is fairly easy, but very pretty. Friday morning we break camp, and hike the rest of the 15 km to Berg Lake, the tough part of the trail. At Berg Lake Campground we will camp for 2 nights and do a dayhike of our choice on Saturday, either to Robson Glacier, or Munn Basin, or Hargreaves lake. Sunday we will pack up, hike back out and drive home, stopping for something to eat in Jasper. I have done this trip several times before and it is a bit of a tough hike, but do-able if you are fairly fit and have some experience carrying a pack. Its worth the effort for the amazing scenery and back country camp experience, Berg Lake is one of my favorite campsites, the views are incredible. The sights and sounds of the glaciers crashing into the lake is so amazing!! As is the valley of a thousand falls, and the day hikes from Berg are really beautiful too. Take a look at the trail map for Berg Lake Berg Lake Trail map ITINERARY Thursday: Meet at the carpool at 7:00 am and leave for Mt Robson, stopping in Jasper for any last minute supplies, a quick lunch. Arrive at Mt Robson info center, pick up our back country passes, park at the trail head and walk the 7 km to Kinney Lake were we will set up camp and have dinner/a>. Friday: Leave Kinney Lake fairly early and hike the rest of the way to Mt Robson, about 15 km. There are a couple of steep sections to navigate, and some rocky parts. Its a popular trail and well maintained though. We will walk through the Valley of a Thousand falls, past Emperor Falls and up to Berg Lake campground, where will camp for 2 nights across the lake from the Berg Glacier. A shelter is available for cooking and storing gear but not for sleeping. Food storage lockers are available outside. Primitive dish washing facilities are provided too but bring your own biodegradable soap. . Saturday: After breakfast sitting in front of one of the best views in the country, we will pack up our day gear for a day hike. There are several options for a day hike, and when we check into the info center we will confirm the conditions and any closures. We may not get to snowbird pass, since the high elevation trail is closed early in the season for Caribou calving. After a day of wandering around the higher elevations, back to the Hargreaves shelter for dinner, relaxing in the campsite and more views. Sunday: We will get up fairly early and pack up camp and go back down the trails. Its a long hike all the way (23 km) down the trail, but its all down hill (mostly) and quite do-able. Normally we get back to the trailhead early in the afternoon. After soaking our tired feet in the cool river, we can stop at the restaurant at the info center or go back to Jasper for lunch before heading back to Edmonton. There will be a pretrip meeting to decide tent partners, food, gear, and other details. Date and time TBC. Max persons is 8, minimum 8. I've booked 4 tent sites for 8 people. This is an amazing hike and worth the additional effort and time to get there. THIS IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS. IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE CLUB EVENTS WITH A SIMILAR DIFFICULTY, YOU MAY BE CONTACTED ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH MOUNTAIN HIKING; THE ORGANIZER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REJECT APPLICANTS WHO THEY FEEL ARE UNSUITABLE. PRE-CONDITIONING HIKES ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Sign up on the wait list, then send me an email briefly outlining your hiking experience, gear, expectations, etc. Its a popular, but serious hike, you need to be prepared, (no wheelie suitcases or flip flops allowed) I will then move you to the participant list. NOTE: (please read the entire posting prior to registering)
