Earth Hour is a global symbolic gesture to raise awareness about climate change. People in cities across the globe have been asked to turn their lights off between 8PM and 9PM on March 26th, in order to show their support for this cause. Celebrate Earth Hour by joining us at Coronation Park for a marshmallow roast. Afterwards, weather permitting, we will try to do some stargazing at the Telus World of Science Observatory. We will meet at SITE 2 of Coronation Park (blue canopy) for the marshmallow roast. The $1 cost that we are asking everyone for will go towards the cost of purchasing marshmallows for the group. Any extra funds that we may collect will be submitted as donations to the EOC. Please Note: Neither Sandie nor Ryan has a wood-burning fireplace nor a place to store firewood, therefore we need your firewood! If you have access to firewood and are able to help us out, please let us know in advance how much you will be able to bring. We will be forever grateful (and will waive the event cost for anyone who is able to bring us some firewood). After the marshmallow roast, we'll head over to the observatory, which is located adjacent to the main building of the Telus World of Science on its south-east side. Astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Edmonton take care of several telescopes in the observatory, and will hopefully be able to show us some really cool celestial wonders, such as stars, planets and nebulae. There is no cost to visit the observatory, but whether we will be able to see anything obviously depends on having clear skies. If the sky is cloudy, the marshmallow roast will still go ahead, but we'll have to take our chances with the stargazing (we might get lucky - sometimes just a slight break in the clouds is enough!). **It is still March, and normal temperatures for the time of year suggest that the temperature will likely be, at best, at or just above freezing during this event. So please make sure you come dressed for the chill! (Layered clothing is really important!) And, consider bringing your own hot beverage to help you to stay warm!** Please note that as it is still winter, the Coronation Park washrooms will not be open. However, washroom facilities are available at the Telus World of Science main building, which will be open until 9PM. Even if you can't attend this EOC event, please consider taking part in Earth Hour by turning off your lights. | |||||||
