Itinerary:
What better way to start the summer season other than a camping trip? This will be a car camping (not backpacking) and day hiking trip to the beautiful David Thompson Country around Nordegg.
We will camp at the beautiful, rustic, Preachers Point campground at Abraham Lake. Note that we are not staying at the Nordegg hostel, and there are no outhouses or running water where we're camping. We are exercising 'no-trace' camping with no facilities. You take your garbage home with you, but we can stop at a nearby garbage pit for disposal. There are outhouses at a nearby campsite, but where we are staying is rustc but so nice. If you really cannot do tenting, you can stay at the nearby Shunda Creek hostel, but please make your own arrangements and indicate your preference to stay at the hostel when you sign up. Otherwise it will be assumed you will be camping with the group (which is better!!!)

SUMMARY-ITINERARY

Friday:
We will leave Friday afternoon, drive the 3 hours, just past Nordegg, and set up camp when we arrive at Preachers Point at Abraham Lake.

We will meet at the carpool site at 4:00 pm and leave Edmonton at 4:15 pm, arriving at the campsite with enough time to set up camp. If you need to leave later, maps will be distributed to find the campsite.

Saturday: - In the morning we will set out on our day-hike then back to the campsite for dinner and relaxing in the beautiful scenery.

Sunday: - In the morning we will set out on our day-hike and back to the campsite for dinner and relaxing in the beautiful scenery.

Monday: - We will break camp, pack up, have a bit shorter day-hike and return to Edmonton, after a late lunch stop in Rocky Mountain House.



The specific hikes will be decided prior to the departure date, but changes may occur on the day of the hike based on local conditions and checking trail conditions, since it is still early in the season. Hikes will be around 8-14 km round trip with elevation gain. Plan for all types of weather; we could have snow, rain conditions, and/or windy conditions, since its early season. You should be comfortable in slightly cooler temperatures during the hikes and especially at night; this includes your personal comfort level and the gear you have.

There will be a mandatory group meeting, MONDAY MAY 9TH 6:30 PM BLOCK 1912 CAFE WHYTE AVE, to plan carpool, food, tent partners, etc.

  • Possible hikes we can do are: Coliseum, Vision Quest, Tuff Puff, Two O Clock Creek, Glacier Lakes, Siffleur Falls and many more. The trails we hike will be dependent on the spring conditions, but they are all terrific in this area!

    NOTES
  • If tents and partners are needed, please let me know and we will make arrangements beforehand or at the meeting, if not, everybody will be responsible for their own gear and sleeping arrangements. MEC, Totem, Campers Village will usually have gear to buy/rent.
  • You need a day pack for lunches and be sure to have a good water supply for the day hikes. Water is available at Abraham Lake but we need to filter.
  • Group hiking in effect in the area. Its early season, bears are waking up and may be hungry, we need to hike together as a group, no speed demons, we stay together for safety. If you are unable to respect this guideline, refrain from signing up.
  • This is a good car camping trip both for people for those who are new to camping in the mountains and for those who have done these trails before.
  • Tent partners, cooking partners, will be decided before hand, via email and pre-trip meeting, Monday May 9th 6:30 pm Block 1912 Cafe Whyte Ave.
  • Please contact the coordinator if you have any questions or concerns. Please email or call me, I'll do my best to answer any questions. I have hiked in this area several times, but we all need to be somewhat comfortable.
  • Drivers are needed to make this event happen. If you are DEFINITELY DRIVING, please indicate how many people you can take in your vehicle in the notes section.

  • Required Items to Bring:
  • All your own gear including daypack for day hikes.

  • Shared or solo tent
  • Appropriate clothing (rain gear, warm clothes)
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad or mattress
  • Bring something warm to wear on your head when you sleep in your tent.
  • Money for carpool.
  • Your own food, whether you cook for yourself, or combine with a tentmate.
  • A hand shovel or other equipment for poopin' in the woods. Or drive to the nearby outhouse

  • Since we are camping near our cars, you can bring extra "stuff". Bring extra warm clothes and blankets in case you need them, and you can always leave them in the car.

    How to Get There:
    Event Directions:Take Highway #2 South to Hwy #11. Take Hwy #11 through Rocky Mountain House, look for a sign for Nordegg and head out toward the Rocky Mountains about 40 to 50 kms. Pass the Nordegg sign. Meeting spot will be given to participants at a later date.

    Carpool Cost: The event coordinator(s) will help you to arrange a centralized carpool if you require it, but it's not guaranteed. Please DO NOT pay your driver en route. Passengers will pay the coordinator, and he/she will distribute the money to the carpool drivers. SO PLEASE BRING CASH!!! Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $188.50 (calculated at total Km * $0.29, effective Thursday, November 21, 2024). This is based on $0.09/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divided by 9. This cost will be multiplied by the number of carpooled cars, and divided by the number of carpool participants.
