Itinerary: | |||||||
For a change of scenery, I would like to hike
along the
waterfront trails in Fort Saskatchewan that follow
alongside the
North Saskatchewan River. This will be a brisk
paced hike, with some single track technical
hiking trails along the river (bring your
backpack for a good conditioning hike if you
want).
We will begin our hike at Fort Saskatchewan Boat Launch, which is located on the South side of Fort Saskatchewan. We will then work our way North along the North Saskatchewan River waterfront, heading towards Turner Park (on the North West side of Fort Saskatchewan), before turning back. We will pass under the Highway #15 bridge during our hike, and we will also be able to view the piers that remain from a long-abandoned and demolished railway bridge that used to be used to provide a passenger rail link to Fort Saskatchewan. The total distance between our starting point and Turner Park is approximately 4.5 km. After completing our hike, those interested can join me for a late snack at a pub in Fort Saskatchewan, before we return to Edmonton. Did you know: Fort Saskatchewan is at the eastern end of an initiative by the River Valley Alliance to build a network of trails that extend all the way from Devon to Edmonton? The Fort Saskatchewan region is also the western terminus of the Iron Horse Trail, and the southern terminus of the Athabasca Landing Trail. The Athabasca Landing Trail project is raising funds to build a footbridge that would potentially use the piers left by the abandoned railway bridge which would connect trail systems on both sides of the river, and connect the Fort Saskatchewan waterfront trail to the Athabasca Landing Trail. | |||||||
