Click HERE for a map of Elk Island National Park. Hike 1: Tawayik Lake Trail We will meet at 9:00 AM at the carpool location and leave by 9:10 AM. Drive is approx.45 minutes. For those meeting at the event (bypassing the carpool), meet you at the Tawayik Lake trailhead for 10:00 AM. The Tawayik Lake Trail is on the north side of Highway #16. Enter left at the Elk Island Sign and follow the road until you see the Tawayik Lake sign. We will hike the 16.5 km that has Aspen forest and meadows;great for viewing elk, bison and waterfowl. We will break for lunch around 12:30pm. The trail is moderate. Participants should be prepared and or expect any weather possibilities for this day. Hike 2: Wood Bison Trail We will park at the Wood Bison trail head after our first hike. The trail head is located on the south side of the highway just west of the main park road (range road 201A). Park entrance fees are free this year in all National Parks in Canada however you will still need to display a Parks Canada Pass on your windshield. You can pick this up at most gas stations or sport supply stores. The trail is a total of 16 km and should take us 4 hrs with a snack break. Hopefully we will spot some bison, moose or deer. 32.5KM is a challenging distance and a overall minimum pace of approximstely 4-5 km/hour is required. If you are not confident in your physical fitness and ability this may not be the event for you. These are loop hikes and no short cuts to go back. | |||||||
