Itinerary: | |||||||
I want to find a good technical terrain trail or two for
backpack/terrain training. I am hopefully going to do the West Coast Trail next year. I've heard what the terrain is
like, and I want to find something that has as much rough
terrain as possible to do with my backpack on for training.
I want to check out the mountain bike trails at Stratchona for this purpose. This hike will be an exploratory event to go check out these trails and assess their suitability for backpack/terrain training, and also assess whether we can train on these trails without damaging them or interfering with cyclists (who these trails are actually for). If you have aspirations of doing the West Coast Trail, or any other rough terrain trails, particularly backpacking, please join me for this exploratory hike, and bring your weighted backpack. Once I've found some suitable locations, I'll post regular training events through to next year. If you have other suggestions for trails/tracks which may fit the training "specifications", please e-mail me with your thoughts. This will be a fast-paced hike with the intention is to explore and assess the route for future events. Anyone who is interested in this walk is welcome - you don't have to be training for anything. Look for Mark wearing (or holding) a blue EOC ball cap, or look up the profile picture on the volunteer page. EOC hikes are designed to put you though your paces as a prerequisite for weekends exploring various hiking trails around Alberta and David Thompson Country. Bring your weighted backpack along for a good backpack conditioning event on the Gold bar trail system, and some single track Strathcona County trails. Click HERE for more info on Edmonton's River Valley System and Parks. Click 1. HERE for more info and tips on beginner backpacking and hiking. Please click 2. HERE for our resource links. This hike is rated as a D4 difficulty because some of the trails have a steep elevation incline sections and may have tree roots, muddy sections, loose surface, narrow trail. Bringing hiking poles or a walking stick is advised. Dogs are welcome on this hike, however they must be *leashed because there is no off- leash area where we are going. Your dog must be capable of climbing steep incline trails and going through single track rough trails. If you are bringing your dog(s) please note this when you sign up for the event. Please ensure you have good hiking foot wear and are well hydrated. Everyone is welcome even if you are not interested in backpacking, although this will be a fast paced hike/conditioning event. Afterwards we can go for some well deserved refreshments and snacks at the Hilltop Pub: 8220-106 Avenue. | |||||||
