Join me for an evening of climbing at west end
location of Rock Jungle
Fitness.
There is no predetermined structure to this activity - this is simply an event aimed at allowing people a chance to climb. Beginners can try bouldering without taking previous instruction. However, if your hope is to climb to the top of the wall on the ropes and you have no prior climbing experience, this is not the event for you. In order to use the ropes without staff assistance, you will have to pass a belay check. To pass a belay check, you must demonstrate to the staff that climbing you can safely tie the rope to your climbing harness, and you must demonstrate that you can safely belay another climber. The belay check costs $5. I will be posting additional climbing events over the winter, and there will be additional opportunities for new climbers to take basic instruction and participate in these types of events. Types of Climbing: Bouldering is the term used for free climbing without the use of ropes. No previous experience is needed for bouldering. There is a set height limit on the walls where bouldering is permitted - so, if you fall, you won't be seriously hurt. Top rope climbing is the most common type of climbing that most of our group will be doing. Top rope climbing involves the use of ropes and since you will climb much higher than you would while bouldering, top rope climbing requires the use of safety equipment (harnesses, belay devices and locking carabiners). The ropes are anchored above the climbing wall. As long as everyone follows the appropriate safety rules, you can safely climb to the top of the wall – if you fall, you won’t fall very far at all. You must work with a partner while participating in top rope climbing - one person climbs, while the other belays (takes away the slack in the rope as the climber scales the wall). Lead Climbing is a much more advanced type of climbing - definitely not for novice climbers. Instead of being anchored above the climbing wall as in top rope climbing, lead climbers anchor the rope to different places on the wall as they climb. If climbers fall when lead climbing, they actually do fall some distance. | |||||||
