Alberta Water Quality Awareness (AWQA) Day is a province-wide initiative focused on increasing our awareness and understanding of water quality and watershed health, through hands-on water quality testing. The findings are compiled annually to create a citizen-generated snapshot of water quality in our province. The program is modeled after World Water Monitoring Day, a successful
global program that promotes watershed protection through public stewardship. We will participate in the AWQA day initiative by taking an evening stroll along the Mill Creek Ravine, testing the water at random locations along the creek. The water testing kit we will use has been provided free of charge by the Alberta Water Quality Awareness Day program, and will allow us to test water pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) content and turbidity at several surface water locations. Please review the testing procedures on the AWQA Day site. You could encounter muddy, rainy conditions, etc – dress accordingly. Be sure to bring water to keep hydrated and bring rain gear if needed. All necessary supplies for conducting the water testing will be provided. If you wish, you can look at a clip from Global News Edmonton that describes the AWQA Day program (Please note - the sound quality on the video is horrible!) | |||||||
