Frances Stewart, who is a Ph.D. student at the University of Victoria, will be giving an upcoming presentation about her research project about fishers. I expect that we will also learn more about a citizen science project relating to Frances' research project that has been organized by the Friends of Elk Island Park Society. The talk will be held at the 55+ Club in Sherwood Park. While the 55+ Club is a Senior's organization, all ages are welcome at this upcoming talk. Doors will open at 7 PM, and the presentation will begin at 7:30. Free refreshments will be provided.

A summary of the presentation that has been made available: Fishers are a member of the weasel family native to most of North America, but their numbers have drastically decreased in the last 100 years. In 1990 they were re- introduced to the Cooking Lake Moraine, but are the animals currently living here descendants from those that were re-introduced? Using multiple methods today we can follow them, look at their DNA, use remote cameras to see how fisher use different habitats, determine if the 1990 re-introduction was successful, and examine if other species compete with fisher.

The fisher is an example of a problem common to wildlife today: a species of special concern trying to survive in areas where the landscape has been highly altered. Come out and discover how these elusive and fascinating critters are making a living in your own backyard.
