If you've been to the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, or made a visit to Dinosaur Provincial Park, you'll know that Alberta is a hot-bed for paleontologists. Right here in Edmonton, the University of Alberta is a major centre for paleontology research. The University of Alberta Museums currently has an exhibition called Discovering Dinosaurs, which highlights the role played by University of Alberta researchers in dinosaur research. The Dino Myths on the Silver Screen presentation is a component of that exhibition, presented jointly by the University of Alberta Museums and the University of Alberta Alumni Association. Clive Coy, Chief Technician of the U of A’s Dinosaur Research Laboratory, will introduce us to one of the earliest dinosaur tales told by Hollywood, the 1925 production of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, which paved the way for Godzilla and the Jurassic Park franchise. Clive will also discuss University of Alberta dinosaur excavations and current research, show footage of the U of A’s 1921 George Sternberg expedition, and dispel some of the silver screen’s dinosaur myths. Admission is $10 for adults at the door ($6 in advance; $8 at the door for U of A students and seniors). Click here to pre-purchase tickets. We will meet inside the theatre lobby (outside the main doors to the auditorium) at 6:40 PM, entering the theatre no later than 6:50 PM to find our seats. I plan to wear a yellow ballcap with the EOC logo on it so that new members can spot me. I expect to turn off my cellphone and to remove the ballcap after the show begins, so it may be difficult to identify our group if you arrive late, after we have entered the theatre. Please find your own seat(s) in the theatre and let me know after the show (by phone/text/email) that you made it out. | |||||
