The
Science in
the Cinema film series is organized by Alberta
Innovates - Health Solutions. Film showings are
free (they
also provide free popcorn). After the film is
shown, there will be a Q and A
led by a health science researcher who will
discuss science
issues relating to the film. On January 16th, the
discussion
after the film will be led by Dr. Karim Fouad of the University of
Alberta, who will discuss recovery following
spinal cord injuries. The film that will be screened is The Intouchables , a 2011 French comedy-drama film directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano and starring François Cluzet and Omar Sy. After he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat (François Cluzet) hires a young man from the projects (Omar Sy) to be his caretaker. The Intouchables has received several award nominations, including nominations for eight César Awards in France, including a win by Omar Sy of the César Award for Best Actor. Film reviewer Nigel Farndale, of The Telegraph, said: "The film, which is about to be released in Britain, has been breaking box-office records in France and Germany, and one of the reasons seems to be that it gives the audience permission to laugh with, not at, people with disabilities, and see their lives as they have never seen them before." Please meet me inside the Garneau Theatre at 6:15 PM. Once you arrive at the theatre, you will first wait in line in the front lobby for admission and popcorn (as admission is free, the wait in the front is mainly for the free popcorn). Continue towards the back (carpeted) lobby where you will meet me just outside the doors to the main auditorium. I will have a yellow ballcap with the EOC logo on it to help you spot me. Once everyone has arrived, we'll find seats together inside the auditorium. I expect that they will begin screening the film promptly at 6:30, so if you arrive late please find your own seat inside the auditorium and try to look for the rest of the EOC group after the film. | |||||||
