Itinerary: | |||||||
Join me on a week day trek - snowshoe to Elk
Island Park!
We will meet at the carpool
spot Bonniedoon
Mall parking lot, south east corner at 10:00 AM
and leave from there at 10:10 AM. Don't be late! We will expect to arrive at the trailhead by 10:45 AM Elk island is an island of natural beauty in Edmonton's back yard, so get away from the city for a few hours and enjoy a day out in the woods. The hike or snowshoe will be a slow to moderate pace with occasional stops to enjoy the scenery and wildlife, take photos, change layers. We can do both the Amisk Wuche Trail (2.5 km), and Beaver Pond Trails (3.5km). These will be good trails for beginner snowshoe, with time to warm up between hikes. WINTER WEATHER MEANS WE MAY HAVE TO BE FLEXIBLE DEPENDING ON WEATHER CONDITIONS CHECK YOUR EMAILS THE DAY PRIOR TO THE SNOWSHOE AS CONDITIONS WILL DICTATE OUR AGENDA FOR THE DAY. NOTE: THE SNOWSHOE WILL BE CANCELLED IN THE EVENT OF VERY COLD OR INCLEMENT WEATHER Beaver Pond - Trappers had eliminated beavers from the park by the mid 1800s. Park staff reintroduced them in the 1940s. This trail is characterized by evidence of beaver activity near the trailhead. Lodges that are overgrown with vegetation are abandoned. The open aspen forest is ideal for observing large mammals grazing in winter, and birdwatching in summer. Amisk Wuch Trail - The name is Cree Indian name for Beaver Hills. The trail winds through aspen, birch, and spruce stands, through small lakes and beaver ponds. As with any winter activity, this one will be weather dependent. Please bring good footwear and dress for the weather, layers to add or shed as needed. IF YOU WEAR COTTON YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN. You will need snowshoes, you can rent at any of the outdoor stores if you don't already have them. If you have any questions on where to get snowshoes or any other information, please email me at injuneer4 at yahoo dot com. I will be in a red Ford Raptor at the carpool location. | |||||||
