Hang out in Calgary with the COC, enjoying all the great stuff that they take for granted on a daily basis. Dates: approx July 26 th to August 7th 2007 – flexible. You decide how long you want to go for and when. Your coordinator, Rhonda will be planning activities specifically for the out-of-town visitors for the dates of July 26 th through August 7th 2007. You choose your exact dates depending on your time and budget. What you're responsible for: - Notify the trip coordinator of your arrival/departure times - Book your accommodation at one of the places in Motel Village. Why Motel Village? Because it is right at a C-Train (LRT) station and all of your activities will be easily accessible from there. If you want to book in someplace else, you're welcome to do that, but keep in mind that getting to and from your events may be more difficult as a result. - Transportation while in the area. If you want to drive down, great. If you don't want to drive, you can find another way down, and get around quite easily WITHOUT renting a car. Motel Village is at a C-Train (LRT) station and all events and carpool locations will be easily accessible from there. If you wish to rent a car, you may, and if you like you can coordinate with your friends to share a rental vehicle, but those arrangements will not be made for you. What will be done for you: - Event planning. Your coordinator, Rhonda, is a volunteer with both the Calgary Outdoor Club and Calgary Culture Club. Let her know what kinds of activities you will want to do when you're in Calgary and she will plan accordingly, including coordinating some events herself, and arranging coordinators for other activities that she won't be participating in. All requests will be accommodated to the best of her ability, but keep in mind that you will still have some free time, and some activities (such as mountain climbing) are outside the scope of the COC (unless a professional guide with insurance is hired). - Information and coordination: Rhonda will keep track of everyone's travel and activity plans and preferences on a separate web page which you can access to get a feel for what will be going on, and also to contact other attendees (if you wish) to coordinate things among yourselves for when you're not on a club activity. Activity ideas and suggestions: - Hiking. Calgary is all about the hiking, and why not!? The Canadian Rockies are less than an hour and a half drive away. If you want to hike, let Rhonda know what you're looking for. We can plan the following types of trips: --- Easy to Moderate: Less than 8km (5mi) with negligible elevation gain --- Moderate: 8-12km (5-7mi) with gentle elevation gain (avg 100m/300ft per every 1km/1mi distance) --- Moderate to Difficult: 10-18km (6+mi) with greater elevation gain (>200m/600ft per every 1km/1mi distance) - Whitewater Rafting: A challenging trip on the Kicking Horse or a more moderate trip on the Kananaskis. - Car Camping or Back Packing - Mountain Biking or Road Riding (rentals are available in Calgary) - Cultural: See Calgary Culture Club for ideas about music, dance, theatre, etc. and let me know what you're interested in. - Others: Inline Skating (rentals are available), Caving - Inline Skating. We have a couple of excellent trails for beginners, and lots for the more advanced. When you're ready to begin planning, check out our trip info to find out what's going on, and who's coming from the different clubs. Still looking for more ideas? Check out the Calgary Outdoor Club web site for more ideas. | |||||||
