Author Sharon Stratton shared her amazing experiences in her 7 years atop fire towers of Alberta with us during her talk at the library. Workers like her are the first line of defense in keeping our forests safe from fire. But beside scanning the skies, their solitary summers are filled with the joys of the great outdoors, being miles from the nearest human being and keeping a cozy cabin like it was a summer getaway. __________ Message from Sharon: Hello Jason, Thanks again for bringing such a great group out to the Riverbend Library! I just wanted to catch up ... I was taken a bit off-guard by the enthusiasm of your members in regards to coming out and hiking. I couldn't think of anywhere really pretty that they might enjoy walking and be a big enough challenge. But now that I'm back in the tower, I thought I would pass along that there might be a nice hike, although it would be down a cutline. From what I've heard from locals, the cutline goes all the way from the tower back to the Hamlet of Robb. It does run SE as well, although I haven't walked in that direction so I don't know how rough it is. Quads sometimes (not often) use the cutline from here to Robb, so I presume that it would be clear walking. For as far as I've ever walked it, there is mature trees on either side, so not much for long-distance viewing, but lovely and quiet. Also, you could walk around down on the minesite and see the ghost town of Lovettville, and there are trout ponds down there, but much of it would be walking dirt roads. Around the end of July, however, the meadows down there are thick with wildflowers and really fragrant. All the best, Sharon. Sharon Stratton, B.Sc.
