Sun, Dec 2 2007 - Fire and Ice - Wintery Fun (View Original Event Details)
|
It was the perfect winter day to enjoy some old-fashioned fun at Fort Edmonton; cold but not windy and enough snow on the ground that we crunched along noisily as we walked.
After a brief ride on the Fort Edmonton Street Car, we toured three lovely houses: the Rutherfords (first Premier of Alberta), the Firkins, and the Hendersons. At the Rutherfords we enjoyed hot tea in lovely, old-fashioned, china cups and saucers. At the Firkins we marveled at the items in the Hudson's Bay catalogue (fur coats cost a mere $45 while fancy dress coats - non fur - cost upwards of $400!) We also listened to a phonograph. At the Henderson house we made beeswax candles and were shown how a butterchurn works.
We concluded the event with hot chai and yummy East Indian cuisine at Remedy on 109th street.
A perfect mix of outdoors, indoors, good company and yummy eats.
See you at the next one!
