Fri, Apr 7 2006 - Elk Island National Park--Tawayik Lake Trail (View Original Event Details)
|
Without hoards of people wanting to go hiking today, I made this an exploratory trip and checked out most of the trail heads. Elk Island National Park has its own unique beauty. It is full of grasslands, wetlands and mainly aspen forests. Most of the snow has melted down to small patches of ice and slush. There are some very large puddles on the trails. In about two weeks the trails will be wonderful to travel on. From what I saw, the trails are well marked and have small kilometer checkmarks along the way. Reminder to self: waterproof the hiking boots before going back. (thank goodness for spare socks and shoes!)
The bison were easily spotted. They move away when you are within 100m. Several bison were near the trails. I found that tapping my hiking poles together made them take notice of me and move away. I look forward to hiking all the trails.
