Thu, Nov 15 2012 - Stargazing (View Original Event Details)
|
Eleven EOCers arrived hopefully at the U of A's observatory. Unfortunately, cloudy weather prevented us from getting a magnified view of Edmonton's starry November skies.
However, several grad students and volunteers were on hand to give us a quick lesson in astronomy, including computer generated images of constellations (and artistic renderings to give us a clearer picture of why constellations have the names they have - so THAT's what the Little Bear and Big Bear (aka Little Dipper and Big Dipper) look like!).
We also had an opportunity to go into the three domes that house the giant microscopes and volunteers and grad students explained the features of the individual machines. We were also lucky enough to be at the observatory in time to hear a satellite overhead (it was a series of beeps but it was still pretty cool).
The next time we host this event, we'll award prizes to those who successfully navigate their way to V Lot. Neither coordinator was successful in this venture this time around.
