Sat, May 29 2010 - Just Another Walk in the Park (View Original Event Details)
|
Yes, it was raining. In fact, it's still raining now! But it was a very pretty hike, with the trees and bushes in the river valley just now filling out their spring growth.
In spite of a cool, drizzly day, 16 people came out to the river
valley for a nice spring walk. We met at the Royal Glenora, crossed to
Emily Murphy Park, re-crossed at Groat Road and climbed McKinnon
Ravine.
Down to Buena Vista (on a rather slippery slope)and on to Laurier
where we paused for
lunch. When we stopped walking at a park shelter it quickly got a bit
cold, so we
snacked hastily and resumed the hike. Back down to Buena Vista and
across to Hawrelak Park, then a nice little stroll along the river
back to the Menzies pedestrian bridge. Total distance was, according
to various estimates, from 13.8 km to 15.5 km.
Interesting things learned for future reference:
- 'Waterproof/Breathable' isn't the same as 'Waterproof'.
- Gloves and hats help keep you warm in wet weather as well as in
cold.
- You can be wet right through but still stay warm while walking, but
when you stop it gets chilly really, really fast.
Thanks everyone for coming out. Hopefully the next one will be
warmer!
